It’s a story about love, friendship, grief, and healing. It’s about a writer who adopts a Great Dane that belonged to a deceased friend and mentor. While most authors don’t like the way their books are adapted into films, Sigrid Nunez has stated that she’s happy with the way her book was presented in this film. Seen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 11, 2024 (first screening). Format: Regular Cinema. The story doesn’t know where it’s going, so it mostly goes on and on and feels like it has no end, and then comes the part where the viewer feels the length and weight of the running time. , which doesn’t last long, but it feels that way because of the slow and sometimes boring pace of the story. The dog is definitely the best thing in the movie. The way he was taught to show these emotions and use his body language to communicate something is very impressive. I didn’t really like how Bill Murray’s character was treated in the story, because I found it very useless. To me, the film is more of a story between a dog and a grieving man than a story about a suicidal writer who died leaving behind a dog. It felt very disjointed in that regard and could easily have delved into the subject or provided a flashback supporting Bill Murray’s character. Other than that, nothing special, but overall a cute and warm film to watch!
