However, they have become parents
Line of Events
Jesus and Maria are a couple going through a rough patch in their relationship. To give shape to their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. A decision that will change their existence. The entire film was shot in 10 days. Salesman: The glass is unbreakable, so your table will last forever.
In a way, it was real life, natural horror
Featured in Half in the Bag: Top 10 Horror Movies (2024), Part 1 (2024). I thought I was going to watch a horror movie. Not the stuff with monsters, supernatural things and nightmares or things that go bump in the night. I gave it a 6 because I think it deserves a little more than an average rating. There isn’t much character development, but we get a little hint of 3 of the characters: Jesus, Maria, and Jesus’ brother Carlos.
I really liked her husband Jesus
Maria can be super annoying at times; there’s nothing really likable about her. The contrast between them is so deep that I don’t see how they could be together. I know couples who are opposites, but this couple was unbelievable. And Ruth, the 13-year-old neighbor, ugh. He’s a peripheral character and by the end of the movie I understood why he exists in this movie.
It’s an emotionally dark, somber movie
The actress did a good job because like Maria, I just wanted to go into the movie and slap her a few times. It’s also shot in dark lighting with very little color, except for one scene where there are a lot of bright colors, which was done intentionally, I’m sure. For me, it was all about the emotions of the characters. At times, it was really hard to watch. There is a black comedy in the first act, but it doesn’t last long.
I can’t say if I would recommend this movie, I’m torn
I don’t think it’s a waste of an hour and a half, but I think you should be prepared to go and see it knowing that it’s dark, emotionally raw, and NOT a horror movie. I don’t know how IMDB determines what genre it lists movies in, but The Coffee Table is not a horror movie, or at least that’s not what I think the average horror fan is looking for when they’re looking for one. It’s also listed as a black comedy, but there’s so little of it that I don’t think it even belongs in that category. Drama is the only genre that makes sense, tragedy would be fine if it were a category. Now I’m off to find a real horror movie that I haven’t seen.
