Line of Events

Charles, a retired man, gets a new lease on life when he answers an ad for a private investigator and becomes a mole in a secret investigation at a nursing home. A Man On The Inside was created for television by Michael Schur, who also helped create Brooklyn 99. A Man On The Inside also has some actors from Brooklyn 99 including Stephanie Beatriz, Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Eugene Cordero, and Marc Evan Jackson. Ted Danson, about 76, plays Charles, a retired engineering professor living in San Francisco.

In fact, this is very clean and therefore more enjoyable

He is also a producer on this series which sets itself apart from most by avoiding the foul language dialogue so common. In the story, his wife had died perhaps a year ago from the effects of Alzheimer’s. He is healthy but perhaps bored with his daily routine. He has a habit of reading periodicals and newspapers and often cuts out an interesting one to send to his married daughter in Sacramento.

Charles is going to be the key

One day through a cut out hole he catches a glimpse of a short little ad. It is looking for someone in the age range of 75-85 for a specific job. This leads him to a private investigator hired by a man whose mother is in some sort of luxury nursing home in San Francisco, some significant jewelry was stolen from her and the son wants the thief caught. So he is hired to search the place, observe and report as the person who exposes what is going on.

My wife and I enjoyed it, streaming it

Ted Danson is just perfect in this role which he plays with a lot of humor. It quickly becomes less about who the thief was and more about the relationships. The cast of characters is played by a group of excellent actors, many of them old favorites we know from the last 50 years. After watching the first three episodes in one night, we watched the last five episodes in one sitting after our usual Saturday night steak and wine dinner.

One of the most enjoyable we’ve ever seen

The ending sets up for a sequel, I hope they do.
